Episode 42: Missing in Action

Hey, kids! Do you like explosions? Our hero having his name yelled repeatedly by upset bad guys? Top rippings? Jet powered boats? Bad covers of Rod Stewart songs? You’ll get all this and more as we tackle the Missing in Action series for episode 42 of GBW!

However, first we take a long time to catch you up on what we’ve been watching (it’s been a month, after all) as we talk the holy grail of 80’s slashers, a daredevil documentary, the newly released Hush, a whole lot of Reb Brown and much, much more!

If you’re a fan of Chuck Norris – or 80’s Cannon action flicks where stuff blows up real good – then tune in as we get lost in the jungles of Vietnam.

Episode 41: Robin Bougie

On this episode, we sit down with Robin Bougie. Robin is the creator of the off-beat Cinema Sewer magazine, writer of the awesome XXX poster loving Graphic Thrills books, and recently behind the adult coloring book “Sugar Spread”.

We talk all about the beginnings of Cinema Sewer, hear tales of 70’s porn, talk about some of our favourite XXX movie spoofs, touch on our first video store experiences, and end it all with one of the funniest word faux pas ever!

Check out everything Robin at www.cinemasewer.com.

Episode 40: The Outsiders Legacy

We read S.E. Hinton’s novel in school. We got caught up in the tale of the greasers vs. the socs. Francis Ford Coppola brought it to the big screen and brought one of the biggest young ensemble casts of the 80’s.

Names like Howell, Swayze, Lowe, and Cruise co-starred and all of them went on to lengthy careers of various quality. We take a look at them all and talk about our favourite moments in their resumes.

But first, we first catch you up with what we’ve been watching as Chris has a hard time being positive about his latest viewings including getting really mad about Kevin Smith. Meantime, Josh talks about Zack Snyder’s takes on Superman and gets all “women in chains” with Pam Grier and Margaret Markov. Plus much more!

Episode 39: Top Ten Vampire Movies

Of all the horror sub-genres, it’s pretty safe to say that vampires have been given the most attention. There’s just so many out there, how could you possibly choose?

That’s where we come in! We’ve both chosen our top ten favourite vampire movies of all-time varying from the arthouse, to the grindhouse, to the “this is so 80’s” cannon – with some surprises in-between. So tune in and hear us talk all about the ‘children of the night’.

As always, we first catch you up with what we’ve been watching as Chris revisits a superhero flick of his youth, the guys continue their recent love affair with everything Burt Reynolds, and Josh half-heartedly chants Beetlejuice three times. Plus much more!

Episode 38: Drive-In Double Features

Despite having its peak in the 50’s and 60’s, the drive-in movie theatre will be forever ingrained into history. Where else can you spend a summer night watching two movies, stuffing your face full of popcorn and hot dogs, hanging out with buddies, and (hopefully) making out in the backseat of your car?

In the spirit of this bygone cinema-going experience we’ve come up with lists of movies we’d love to see paired up and on a giant outdoor screen while the speaker hooked up to our car window gives off the crackly sounds of tinny gunfire and explosions.

First off we catch you up with what we’ve been watching as Chris takes a big journey back to the 80’s with the likes of the javelin killing slasher flick Fatal Games and hyperactive dancing of Flashdance while Josh continues his path towards depravity with I Spit on Your Grave 2 as well as discovering one of his favourite vampire movies of all-time. Plus much more!

Episode 37: The Corman

There’s not too many people you can point at and say they are not only a legend but also a maverick, a shrewd businessman, a mentor, and a harvester of talent but all these things (and more) can be said about legendary filmmaker/producer Roger Corman.

For this episode of GBW we talk about one of the guys, if not THE guy, who got us into b-movies – and movies in general – with his mix of exploitation that included much comedy, a whole lot of over-the-top violence, and the much welcomed occasional nudity. And he did it all with a smile.

But first we’ll catch you up to speed on what we’ve been watching including another excursion into Japanese crime cinema of the 60’s, Arrow Video delivering a much sought after 80’s slasher, more crocodile chomping humans madness, and an early look at The Witch.

Episode 36: Tapeheads

In the 80’s John Cusack starred in many beloved flicks such as Better Off Dead and Say Anything… but we’re willing to be you probably haven’t heard of the subject of this episode: 1988’s Tapeheads.

Starring Cusack and Tim Robbins, this off-beat comedy has our two pals trying to break into the music video business and there’s a whole lot of cameo appearances, musical numbers, and wacky humour along the way! Plus it’s produced by Michael Nesmith from the Monkees!

Tune in to listen to us talk about this lesser known 80’s comedy and also for us to catch you up to speed on what we’ve been watching including some a killer grizzly, hungry from human flesh crocodile, and a surprising verdict on Deathgasm.

Episode 35: The Covers Go To 11

In tribute to the recent passings of Lemmy and David Bowie we’ve decided to venture into the world of music for this episode. And what better way to do that than talk about covers? We all have heard them. Some we love for how they change the original or how the artist reinterprets them, others we despise for how the ruin the source material.

Which is why we go all “Spinal Tap” and list our top 11 favourite cover songs. We also talk briefly about ones that didn’t make our list and others we absolutely hate.

But first we’ll catch you up to speed with what we’ve been watching including some bigfoot, Leo DiCaprio vs. a bear, a whole lotta love for Excision, and much more!

Episode 34: 2015 Recap

It’s a marathon of an episode for our first show of 2016! Your hosts, Chris and Josh, have seen quite a few movies since the last time we spoke and we tell you all about Don “The Dragon” Wilson’s ‘sweet ass’, take a trip on the Midnight Meat Train, get a little ass-to-mouth with the third Human Centipede, and so much more!

Then we dive into the past year as we look back at 2015. We list our Top 5 flicks of the year, some honourable mentions, 2015 stuff we’re still excited to watch, the TV shows that caught our attention, and films we’re excited to check out in 2016.

Episode 33: Brisson & The Bronx

It’s comics meets the post apocalypse as we welcome creator/writer Ed Brisson (Sheltered, Cluster, The Violent) to the show to talk about his career, influences and determination to get into the world of comic books. We discuss his beginnings as an indie filmmaker, writing a “Sons of Anarchy” spin-off, getting to live every comics fan dream of scripting Batman, and so much more!

For the second half of this episode we also gave Ed the chance to pick a movie for us to talk about and, much to our chagrin and (more so) delight, he chose the 1982 Italian knock-off, 1990: The Bronx Warriors. Take a journey with us into the futuristic 1990(!) world of New York where gangs roam the wasteland that is the Bronx as “Trash” (Mark Gregory) and his gang have to protect a misplaced heiress from other gangs and the malicious cop sent to bring her back to the safety of Manhattan. From director Enzo G. Castellari (Keoma, The Last Shark), this is Italian rip-offing at its finest.
