Episode 50: Todd Masters

We made it! That’s right, GBW has hit 50! And what better way to celebrate than to bring you our biggest guest ever!

To help us celebrate our 50th, we talk to effects maestro Todd Masters. The head of Masters FX and having worked on such films as Slither, Night of the Creeps, and Tales from the Crypt: Demon Knight as well as such big name television shows as “True Blood” and “Fringe”, Todd was kind enough to allow us to visit his Vancouver studio and sit down with us to talk all about his career including some amazing stories and a whole bunch of laughs.

Episode 49: Top Ten 80’s Action

Growing up in the 80’s was the prime time for some high testosterone manliness and THE decade for the All-American action hero. The kind of guy who could take out an entire army of baddies all by himself – usually with guns that never seemed to need reloading. We’re talking names such as Chuck Norris, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Sylvester Stallone.

What are our favourite 80’s action flicks? Which would we not hesitate to recommend to those who (sadly) missed out on this prime-time for over-the-top and ridiculous action? Tune in and hear both of our lists – and be as surprised as we are at a couple of the entries.

But first, we talk about what we’ve been watching including a movie that takes George A. Romero’s name in vain, a visit to the theatre to see Don’t Breathe, the cowboy robots of Westworld, and much more!

Episode 48: The Raimi

With his kinetic energy, creative camera movements, and (at times goofy) sense of humour, Sam Raimi has made tons of memorable films during his career. Aside from being behind one of the more iconic horror franchises in the past thirty-years with The Evil Dead; Sam also directed the best superhero movie of all-time with Spider-Man 2, tackled westerns with The Quick & The Dead, and even took a trip to the land of Oz. He also has produced such cult favourites as “Xena: Warrior Princess” and horror flicks under the Ghost House label as well as trying his hand in acting. We dig the guy and talk all about him in Episode 48.

First we talk about what we’ve watched and somehow manage to relate “Stranger Things”, the Ghostbusters remake, and Suicide Squad to each other as well as talk about some killer bugs (Infested), one of David Lynch’s finest films (The Elephant Man), and Josh goes back on his word and watches Lake Placid vs. Anaconda – plus much more!

Episode 47: Catching Up

Episode 47 is now available!

Oh, boy, do we have a lot of movies to talk about this time! So many, in fact, that we’ve decided to split this episode into two parts.

This first installment has Chris and Josh bringing you up to speed on what they’ve been watching including some anthologies by the way of V/H/S 2, a whole bunch of movie/music related documentaries (I Am Thor, to name one), and tons more. This is what happens when we don’t talk about these things for a month!

After this episode, we will be following it with a .5 where we dive into our selected topic “Deadly Vehicles”. You may know them by their name (Christine), their look (The Car), or just their merciless, ahem, “drive” (Duel) – all this can be had… NEXT TIME!

Episode 46: Vince D’Amato

This week on GBW we welcome special guest, Vince D’Amato.

A staple on the Vancouver indie film circuit for around fifteen years, Vince co-founded Creepy Six Films who are responsible for such flicks as Carmilla (aka Vampires vs. Zombies) and The Hard Cut, is the programmer/director of Shivers Film Society who strive to bring lesser-known indie films and classics to the bring screen as well as organize special guests such as Lloyd Kaufman, and he has also formed Brivido Giallo to creature modern day giallo inspired films.

We fill Vince up with plentiful beer for an interview that spans such topics as his first horror movie experiences, how he became an indie director and the challenges along the way, what the impetus was for forming Shivers, and even manage to get some giallo recommendations for those of us (like Chris) who are just starting to get into the sub-genre.

Episode 45: Caligula

Somehow in 1979, Penthouse hooked up with some Italian filmmakers and “legit” actors like Malcolm McDowell and Helen Mirren to make a historical film about the life and insanity of Roman Emperor Caligula. Oh, and did I mention they also decided to insert a bunch of hardcore sex while they were at it?

It’s a movie that’s production history is so damn bizarre and fascinating that it’s easy to see why this has gone on to be such a cult movie. Why did this get made? What were they thinking? How many cock close-ups do we possibly needed?

We watched Caligula and talk all about it. But first we catch you up on what we’ve been watching including James Wan’s Conjuring 2, a trip back to found footage land, Josh ranting about one of the worst movie’s he’s (possibly) ever seen, and much more!

Episode 44: Movie Reference Books

Yes, there was a time before the good ‘ole internet where we actually had to resort to books (not IMDB) to learn about movies. Where we built up of knowledge of all things filmmaker, horror, b-movie, and beyond. It was a glorious time to be a kid and thanks to the abundance of movie reference books out there you can recapture the thrill of flipping through pages of analysis and stills.

First off we’ll catch you up on the (lots) we’ve been watching in the three weeks between episodes including some Nice Guys, a couple of murderous doll movies, and an oddly large amount of found footage flicks.

Episode 43: Lesser Known Monsters

We all know Frankenstein. King Kong. Godzilla. But what about the monsters equally as cool that you might not know about? This episode we shine the light on monsters we think deserve more recognition from the smallest of minions, to a toothy outer space invader, and even a sssssssnake man.

But first, as usual, we fill you in on what we’ve been watching as Josh (finally) finishes another franchise, we look at another 80’s slasher flick from Arrow Video, and much more!

ep43

Episode 37: The Corman

There’s not too many people you can point at and say they are not only a legend but also a maverick, a shrewd businessman, a mentor, and a harvester of talent but all these things (and more) can be said about legendary filmmaker/producer Roger Corman.

For this episode of GBW we talk about one of the guys, if not THE guy, who got us into b-movies – and movies in general – with his mix of exploitation that included much comedy, a whole lot of over-the-top violence, and the much welcomed occasional nudity. And he did it all with a smile.

But first we’ll catch you up to speed on what we’ve been watching including another excursion into Japanese crime cinema of the 60’s, Arrow Video delivering a much sought after 80’s slasher, more crocodile chomping humans madness, and an early look at The Witch.
